First Baptist Church Winton History:
In
the year 1886, a school which was later named the Calvin Scott Brown School was
organized. Eleven years later, a church was organized on the campus in the
school’s chapel. That church was given the name “South Winton Church”. The
Reverend Dr. Calvin Scott Brown, a native of Salisbury, North Carolina became
the first pastor of the new church. Dr.
Brown was a graduate of Shaw University of Raleigh, North Carolina.
By the year 1910, the church was being used by the student body of the Calvin Scott Brown School. Boarding students at the school attended services at the church. In the beginning, church services were held on 4th Sunday nights. Students who lived at the school were required to attend.
Mrs. Amaza Reynolds Faulkner, whose father, Mr. Fell Reynolds helped to lay the foundation for the South Winton Baptist Church, was the first female member of the church. She later served as the mother of the church.
One of the first moderators was Mr. Will Brown, son of Dr. Calvin Scott Brown, the first pastor of the church. Other moderators were: Mr. Jim Weaver, Mr. Rochelle Vann, Mr. Melvin Johnson, Dr. Dudley Flood, Mr. Matthew Jarmon and Mr. Lionel Weaver.
In 1973, the church was bricked. Dr. Joseph D. Weaver and Mr. Eley Reid signed the note to borrow the money needed for the renovation. After paying for the work done, $50.00 was left over. With this $50.00 a building fund was started for future use.
Until 1973, the church belonged to the Hertford County Board of Education as the church had no deed to the property on which the church was located. Mr. Ulysses Hall talked to Mr. Russell P. Martin, Superintendent of Hertford County Schools and finally got a deed for the land on which the church is constructed. There is a seventy feet frontage.
Many great ministers have served what is now, First Baptist Church Winton beginning with the late Dr. Calvin Scott Brown. Dr. Brown is buried on the campus of the Calvin Scott Brown School in the rear of the church. He died in 1936.
